There are many thoughts and theories regarding the ideals and principals of “Good Coaching”. “Good Coaching” is basically placing your athletes in the best possible position for them and the team to succeed. Coaching football, though, goes well beyond the strategies of X’s and O’s. The most successful coaches, leaders of men, understand the importance of leadership and communication development.
Just like any skill, leadership is something that must be practiced and developed daily. Whether you are a youth coach or deal with professional athletes, leadership development must be a top priority for building championship teams. The success of your program (team, business, personal training, etc.) will ultimately be decided on your ability to communicate the vision with everyone else. Communicating the plan in effect will make certain that your entire team is on the same page.
Even the smartest men coaching football are only able to go so far because of their leadership limitations. As the lead you must continue to thrive towards excellence and take pride in being a lifelong learner. Draw from personal experiences and don’t be afraid to reach out to others for advice. Keep a relentless attitude and challenge yourself and others to attain victory in every aspect of training.
One thing that we cannot forget when coaching football is that leadership isn’t about self-promotion but about how far can you promote others.
Creating opportunities for others (coaches and athletes) to find success will only make the team stronger. You must be willing to sacrifice personal glory for the good of the team. As the leader you must be willing to make the biggest sacrifice on the team. A leaders true worth is found in the number of successful coaches that you develop. You must be honest and ask yourself are the people in your program better men and women because of your leadership??
Before any plan is executed it is the responsibility of the leader to plot the course but most importantly communicate the vision. Effectively coaching football means that you can create a vision and have athletes and coaches “buy in”. The leader must construct the dream first and then the people will follow. Communication is the key that will allow the team to believe in the plan and give 100% effort when striving for the impossible.
It’s up to the coach to initiate the leadership development process. Strength and conditioning coaches should place a priority on building character and teamwork during training. It is your objective as the coach to inspire the great team leaders in ways that will create progressive development in themselves and in turn enthuse the team in abundant ways.
It is realistic to think that at any level the coach has the power to changes lives. It comes down to whether or not you as the lead have organized a plan to lay the foundation that can lead to the maturation of leadership behavior. Creating a winning culture will depend on your level of effectiveness as a leader and communicator.
